Start with the intended use
The same building or machine can require very different models. A presentation render prioritizes appearance. A digital twin needs coordinates and a clear object hierarchy. A browser application also needs a strict performance budget. The use case should define the production standard.
Check whether the source data supports the target accuracy
CAD, BIM, point clouds, photos, video and dimension sheets provide different evidence. Drawings support structure and dimensions, images support appearance, and point clouds support as-built reconstruction. Missing information should be identified before modeling.
Turn quality into testable requirements
Define file formats, units, coordinates, names, hierarchy, materials, polygon budgets, LOD, editability and review outputs. Terms such as high quality or high detail are not sufficient acceptance criteria.
Use a pilot to reduce batch risk
For a large scope, begin with one representative building, machine or floor. A pilot reveals conflicts between source quality, visual targets, hierarchy and performance before full production.
